Going too far is as bad as not going far enough
Moderation means the ability or quality of keeping one's desires within reasonable limits, of controlling one's habits, etc. No one can deny that it is a kind of merit. But meanwhile we know everything has its limitation. Anything beyond its limitation will turn to the bad side. Just as the old saying goes: " Going too far is as bad as not going far enough", moderation in all things is ill-considered advice.
With the development of this society, the sense of ego developed and the individualism formed. People paid more attention to himself and do things following his own preference. But as we know, everything has its rule. Nature has its natural law and the human society has its man-made laws. People are in an entirety and have all kinds of connections with each other. For example, the western industrization and the western expansion are at the cost of the destroy of the primeval forest, hence leading to the harsh climate and the extinction of some animal. / People are subconsciously all selfish, if we are not limit our desire and continue in seeking for individual profits, for instance, money, and get rid of the person or the things in our way of seeking for profits. We will at last take the road of our doom either because of violating the law or because of incurring public wrath. Take a simpler example, one who favors meat very much takes it as three meals. What is the consequence? Everyone can imagine what will happen if he does not limit his desire. So moderation is necessary for us. We should do things in moderation. That is to say everything has limitation. So such limitation can also be used in "moderation".
We cannot say moderation in all things but to say moderation in most things. As I said above, owing to the weakness of human beings and the law in everything, people should be act in moderations. But it does not mean everything should be acted in careful, in overcautious. In fact many areas of human concern require intense forces. For example, in the process of the scientific discovery, the discovers need a spirit of perseverance and intensive study. Another field, I think, is the attitude to the national affairs. Any country has its independent sovereignty. In dealing with the international affairs, she must have her own standpoint and persist in what she thinks right no matter how great her opponent is. If a country has a moderate attitude in those affairs again and a-gain, she will lose what she should have in the international society and become less important. It is very important and useful to show the intense forces at the proper time and proper place.
In short moderation is a merit. But we should use it in proper time and proper place.
